The Association

Associação Cívica Dr. Pedro Jorge dos Santos Pinto

About us

The Association grew out of Pedro’s siblings’ shared wish and, from the outset, received the spontaneous and generous support of friends, colleagues, and others whose lives had been touched by his presence. For many of us, knowing Pedro was a transformative experience—one that left a deep mark and continues to shine a light even two decades after his passing.

For a long time, the pain of loss was too great to turn this wish into action. Life brought other urgent responsibilities: young children, developing careers, and the need to rebuild meaning in a world that had suddenly changed irreversibly. We lacked time, but above all, we did not yet have the emotional space.

Today, with greater maturity and a sense of peace, we feel that the time has come to remember Pedro not only with sadness, but also with gratitude: to recognize how fortunate we were to have him with us and to carry forward—even as a small spark—something of what he represented.

We want this initiative to transform pain into hope, so that the brief but intense light of Pedro’s life can continue to guide others—especially young doctors who, like him, seek to go further.

What we propose

We created and maintain this Association to promote the values Pedro S. Pinto quietly but profoundly embodied throughout his life. His dedication to medicine, pursuit of excellence, intellectual curiosity, openness to the world, and commitment to well-rounded personal development left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

We believe that professional excellence stems from knowledge, rigor, and hard work, but also from the ability to question, learn continuously, and broaden horizons. We therefore aim to encourage not only academic and scientific education, but also curiosity, culture, and exposure to different realities and experiences that contribute to young people’s personal and professional growth.

In healthcare, we seek to promote excellence in medical practice, with a special focus on radiology, the specialty to which Pedro dedicated his life and in which he left a nationally and internationally recognized legacy.

As one of our first initiatives, we intend to support the Congresso Português de Radiologia through a session titled “Pedro S. Pinto—Excellence in Radiology,” led by an internationally renowned guest. We want this session to provide a forum for sharing knowledge and inspiration while advancing excellence in radiology in Portugal.

Reflecting Pedro’s roots, we have also established a partnership with the Escola Secundária de Gondomar, where he studied before entering medical school. As part of this collaboration, an annual award will be presented to two outstanding students, recognizing not only their academic achievement but also qualities such as dedication, curiosity, a capacity for learning, and the determination to go further.

In the future, we will seek to promote other initiatives for students and young professionals, both within and outside healthcare, that encourage study, continuing education, and exposure to different cultural and scientific contexts. We will strive to help develop more competent professionals and more informed, curious, and humane citizens, prepared to face the challenges of a constantly changing world.
